Celtics Name Two Captains For The 2023 24 Season

Celtics Name Two Captains for the 2023-24 Season

Breaking with Tradition

For the first time since Brad Stevens became head coach of the Boston Celtics, the team will have two captains for the upcoming season. This decision marks a departure from the Celtics' recent tradition of having a single captain.

The Celtics' Captaincy History

In the past, the Celtics have had a number of notable captains, including Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Rajon Rondo. Under Stevens' leadership, Isaiah Thomas and Kyrie Irving have also served as captains.

The New Captains

The two players who will serve as captains this season are Jayson Tatum and Marcus Smart. Tatum is entering his sixth season with the Celtics and has emerged as one of the team's most important players. Smart, meanwhile, is entering his ninth season with the Celtics and is known for his defense and leadership.

Ime Udoka's Decision

Celtics head coach Ime Udoka said that he made the decision to name two captains because he believes that it will help the team be more successful.

"I think it's important to have multiple leaders on the team," Udoka said. "Jayson and Marcus are both natural leaders, and I think they will complement each other well as captains."

The Celtics' Outlook

The Celtics are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2022-23 season. With Tatum and Smart leading the way, the Celtics have the potential to be a contender in the Eastern Conference.
