Interest Rates: Have They Peaked?
2023 Outlook
After the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) aggressive approach to curbing inflation throughout 2022 and 2023, homeowners have faced a barrage of rate hikes. The future of interest rates, however, remains uncertain.
Mixed Predictions
Experts have varying predictions regarding the trajectory of interest rates. While some believe rates have already peaked, others anticipate further increases. The big four banks in Australia, however, unanimously predict that rates will not start declining anytime soon.
NAB Forecast
According to NAB, interest rates will reach a peak of 4.10% in July 2023 before gradually decreasing to 3.10% by July 2024, offering some respite to mortgage holders.
2024 Outlook
While the exact path of interest rates in 2024 remains unknown, it is widely believed that they will remain elevated. The RBA's decision to halt rate hikes at 4.35% suggests that the central bank may have reached the end of its tightening cycle. However, with inflation still above the RBA's target range, it is possible that further rate increases may be necessary to bring inflation under control.
