Former Gopher football player Casey O'Brien is battling a rare form of cancer and his family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with his medical expenses.

O'Brien, a starting offensive lineman for the Gophers from 2004-2007, was diagnosed with stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma, a cancer of the bile ducts, in January 2023.

The average life expectancy for someone with stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma is 6-12 months, but O'Brien is determined to beat the odds.

"I'm not going to let this cancer define me," O'Brien said. "I'm going to fight this thing with everything I have."

O'Brien's family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with his medical expenses. The page has already raised over $100,000.

"We are so grateful for all the support we have received from the community," O'Brien's wife, Sarah, said. "It means the world to us."

O'Brien is currently undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy. He is also taking part in a clinical trial at the Mayo Clinic.

"I know the road ahead is going to be tough," O'Brien said. "But I'm not going to give up. I'm going to keep fighting for my life."
